Encourage Reading

As a child and even as an adult, I love reading books! It is the highlight of my day to pick up the Quran, tafsir, hadith, biography, or believe it or not sometimes a dictionary and just being able to read it, gain a benefit from it, and contemplate over the meanings. It is truly a blessing from Allah.

Encourage your children to read! Some of my favorite books came from titles we all know, but may have forgotten.

Try these:

The Scholastic Reader Level 1 & 2 books

The "I Can Read Books" Levels 1 -4

Do you remember Clifford The Big Red Dog?, or The Magic School Bus?, what about Amelia Bedelia?

All are wonderful for beginning readers and those starting to read on their own.

Lesson on the Bee

And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: "Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. "Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)." There comes from their bellies, a drink of varying color wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.»

Vocabulary List

Site Words Vocabulary Print Out

Instructions:

The following words will appear at least twice in the SSCG Reading Books that will be used for class inshaAllah. Students will each week create word cards. After reading the story, students will be asked to find their words in the story to identify the words. Students will be asked to create new sentences using their word cards.

Game suggestion 1: Take the cards and lay them out on the table or floor, call out a word and have the children "Find It", once they find it they hold it up. If correct they keep the cards. Whoever has the most cards at the end wins the game inshaAllah.

Game Suggestion 2: Make two copies of the word cards and play "Go Fish", deal out four cards to each player. Stack the rest in a pile. Player 1 ask for a word card that they have to match the one in their hand, if the other player does not have the word card, they tell player 1 to "Go Fish". They must pick 1 word card from the pile. Player 2 takes a turn by repeating the same process inshaAllah until they have found their word card match. When a player has found their word card match and has matched all their cards they have "Won" the game, but can continue until all the word cards are matched.

Purpose

To motivate and guide student observation of animal and plant
similarities, diversity, and appropriateness to live in different
environments; to show that stories sometimes give plants and animals
attributes that they don't really have.

Safe Kids

Every year, nearly 5,000 kids — mostly toddlers — fall out of windows; 28 percent require a hospital stay, and dozens die. A child who falls 10 feet can suffer spinal cord injury, paralysis and fatal head injury. SAFE KIDS strongly recommends window guards on all windows above the first floor, preferably guards equipped with an emergency release device in case of fire.

A screen is not a safety device. It's designed to keep insects out, not to keep children in. Proper window guards were shown to reduce fatal falls by up to 35 percent as part of a pilot program in New York City. In an apartment in a high-rise building, window guards should be considered essential safety equipment.

Still, no safety device can take the place of active adult supervision. Always keep an eye on kids around open windows. Toddlers have been known to fall out of windows open as little as five inches.

SAFE KIDS also reminds parents and caregivers:

  • Keep windows locked when they're closed, and keep furniture away from windows so kids can't climb to the ledge.
  • Don't assume a closed window is childproof. If you have double-hung windows — the kind that can open down from the top as well as up from the bottom — it is generally safer to open the top pane, but growing kids may have enough strength, dexterity and curiosity to open the bottom pane.
  • Never try to move a child who appears to be seriously injured after a fall. Call 911 and let trained medical personnel move the child with proper precautions. (If a child is not breathing and you are trained in CPR, as all parents should be, follow your CPR protocols.)
  • Tie t he curtain pulls or blind cords out of reach. Kids have been strangled while playing with dangling cords. Install safety tassels on the ends of the curtain pulls, or cut the loops, so a child is less likely to get trapped.

Visit the Safety Tips page for more information about window safety, falls and childproofing. National Window Safety Week is an annual program of the National Safety Council.
